After buying the matrix, we noticed that the sunroof didn’t look Toyota or GM OEM. A quick google search of Webasto (found on the handle) found out it had a stupid aftermarket sunroof. And the thing “move to closed” position is børked. And it’s getting recalled....

So I’m at a somewhat local audio installer to get it replaced under recall...and they say it needs a 125-250 dollar rail cleaning service...fuck that. I’m not screwing around with aftermarket sunroofs anymore.

So I used to have a 2000 Chrysler Town and Country, and it had a Webasto sunroof. It was starting to get a lot of wind noise, and we never opened it (because it didn’t work) so I sealed it with duct tape.

One day, the duct tape apparently failed, then the glue holding the glass failed, spectacularly, while going about 50 on the highway. That was the first time the roof had been, uh, open in years. I was thrilled when I sheepishly called the installer about getting it fixed and they told me there was a recall.

That rail cleaning service is bullshit. Clean the rails yourself with a piece of cloth and then find the drain tubes. Blow them out with compressed air if you have it - or a pressure washer.

I work in the industry and aftermarket sunroofs are as good as the installer. Seriously - Webasto makes a good sunroof except for the fact that some of them have adhesive that deteriorates in the sun and causes roof panels to fly off.

I work for a company that owns Signature - formerly ASC - the company that made the ASC McLaren Mustang/Capri and all third-gen F-body convertibles.

There are a bunch of reasons people get sunroofs installed aftermarket - first being that it’s not offered in their trim level. Look at Honda - where the sunroof is standard on EX and higher models but not available on any others.

Cost is a major consideration, too. From an Accord Sport to an EX is a $3500 jump in price and that adds... a sunroof, turn signal camera, seat heaters, and... that’s about it. Most companies charge between $1000-1200 for an aftermarket sunroof.

Warranty: With a new car, the sunroof is only covered for your bumper-to-bumper warranty. Our roofs come with a lifetime warranty. That includes an annual inspection/service for adjustments and whatever that “rail cleaning,” they’re trying to sell is. We had a 2007 Accord LX with 225k miles come in this week and the sunroof’s control module was only allowing it to open about halfway. We replaced the module no questions asked.

I’ve looked into it recently, its a lot of work and money to convert from a sunroof to not. Mainly because I couldn’t stand the thought of looking up at my own handywork everyday.

I don’t think sunroofs were ever standard on a 3-series. That being said, I think you appreciate the extra headroom, as my head rubs my headliner over highway bumps.

I thought that Webasto made pretty good sunroofs. But as sunroofs are pretty useless I could also say “this flu of mine is pretty good”.

Here’s the Finlandia 2000 (this is the actually name for these) sunroof that all cool cars had to have in 80’s. The car is a Polish made Fiat that came with the sunroof as standard equipment.

Kinja'd!!!

In Europe Webasto is mostly famous for making auxiliary heaters for vehicles.

That’s an odd suggestion, though I suppose it’s so that no adhesive messes up your paint. In my case, I didn’t give a fuck because the car had 185k on it and was scrapped (by Pick N Pull for nearly $1000, which was awesome) shortly thereafter. So for me, it was duct tape, which I should point out lasted months.

Resetting a Webasto Hollandia sunroof is pretty easy:

Switch on ignition, but do not start the car. With the sunroof closed, press the close button (down arrow button) and hold it for 5 seconds. Then immediately open the sunroof completely and continue to press down the open button (up arrow button) for 5 seconds.

Just a mild solvent to clean the slides is all you need.

I’m not a fan of aftermarket sunroofs either, but if I had to have one, I’d hope it to be a Webasto. They’re a reputable German company better known for auxiliary engine heaters. Here in Canada anyway, the word “Webasto” is a noun in the trucking & heavy equipment industries.
